HTC Vive VR Headset Price, Pre-Orders, Minimum Specs Announced at MWC 2016

At MWC 2016 on Sunday, HTC announced the pricing and availability information of its VR headset - the Vive - co-developed with Valve. The HTC Vive consumer edition will be priced at $799 (roughly Rs. 54,900), and will begin shipping April 1. Pre-orders begin on February 29. The announced price should be a relief to those consumers scared away by reports of the Vive sporting a $1,500 price tag - though it is still $200 more than the Oculus Rift.
The Vive will be made available in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Sweden, Taiwan, China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
To put the price of the perspective, note that its chief rival - the Oculus Rift - is priced at $599 (roughly 41,200). The Rift box will include the headset with built-in headphones and mic, sensor, an Xbox One controller and an Oculus Remote, a new input device that helps users navigate through the Oculus store or explore video content. The Oculus Touch motion controller however, will be shipped later at an additional cost. The Rift pre-orders will also ship with EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale. Oculus Rift will start shipping to 20 countries from March. It will also be available in limited regions with select retailers in April.
The HTC Vive on the other hand ships with two wireless controllers, two Lighthouse laser base stations for room-based motion tracking, a hub to collect data and send it to the PC, and two games - Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives by Owlchemy Labs, and Fantastic Corporation by Northway Games. The Vive headset features a front-facing camera, an integrated microphone, Bluetooth connectivity, and HTC is also touting a new feature called Vive Phone Services, giving users access to phone features such as making or receiving phone calls, reading text messages, seeing calendar invites, and more.
htc_vive_consumer_edition_front.jpgHTC also says the consumer edition of the Vive headset is much more comfortable to wear than previous prototypes and developer editions, with a new and improved headstrap, apart from other minor design changes that make it more ergonomic for a wider range of users. Just as with the Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive is required to be connected to a relatively powerful PC to work as intended.
The Taiwanese company has also revealed the minimum PC specifications for the HTC Vive.
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970, AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent or better
  • CPU: Intel i5-4590 / AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better
  • RAM: 4GB or more
  • Video Output: HDMI 1.4, DisplayPort 1.2 or newer
  • USB Port: 1x USB 2.0 or better port
  • Operating System: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 or later, Windows 10
To recall, HTC unveiled the Vive Pre second generation developer headset during the CES 2016 trade show in January. The second-gen developer edition sports few changes in hardware design. The company also overhauled the VR controllers, making it more ergonomic than before. It also has softer edges, improved balance, new textured buttons and a more comfortable grip pads.

Cyanogen's Mod Platform to Enable Deep App Integration in Cyanogen OS

Cyanogen's Mod Platform to Enable Deep App Integration in Cyanogen OS

Cyanogen's Mod Platform to Enable Deep App Integration in Cyanogen OS

Cyanogen on Monday announced 'Mod,' a platform that will enable app developers to integrate their apps more directly into its Cyanogen OS operating system. The company has also launched a similar program for OEM and MNO partners. The programme should not be confused with the community-sourced CyanogenMod development initiative.
The software company that aims to take "Android's future away from Google's hands" said it is making many APIs available to app developers that will allow them to better leverage and position their apps on its commercial Android operating system, Cyanogen OS.
Such integration will open new doors for app developers. For instance, if an app developer has a voice calling app, he or she will be able to integrate this feature directly into the default dialler app of the operating system.
The company says that 'Mod' will allow its developer to work in the "post-app" era. For now, however, it has partnered with a small number of app developers. It insists that it will open the program to everyone eventually. The platform will roll out to users with Cyanogen devices with Cyanogen OS 13.0 in March.
For an average consumer Joe, this means that they will have a plethora of mods to choose from. Cyanogen says that it will even "nudge users to install the perfect mod" to help them with their daily chores.
"Thinner bezel, better biometrics, faster processors... changes never cease, yet many people are still bored with their devices. Why is this? We think people are intuitively looking for a more natural way to interact with them. Mod enables this by effectively creating a new runtime, a new way to build services for the Android super platform," said Kirt McMaster, CEO & Co-Founder of Cyanogen.

mod_ready_official.jpg

The first generation of these mods features deep integrations of Cortana and Skype into Cyanogen OS. The company says that through its partnership with Microsoft, a user will be able to install Skype directly into their dialer to add VoIP functionality. Cortana, on the other hand, offers improved integrations with features such as voice-activated selfies. Cyanogen also said that it will soon make possible integrating Hyperlapse into the camera app. A mod for Truecaller is also available that offers protection from spam messaging.
To recall, Microsoft released Cortana to Android last year. The company's digital voice assistant, however, due to limitations imposed by Google, can only offer some of its features.
And for the same reason, this program will excite many app developers. If app developers are able to position their apps and services more prominently in the operating system, they can better serve the customers. Google, while offers a range of APIs that a developer could use and take advantage of, many have criticised the company for not allowing developers to integrate their apps with the core of the operating system.
Cyanogen says that it has launched a programme called Mod Ready for OEMs and MNO partners to speed up the development time of new devices and services. It says that it will provide them with a development kit and ensure that their software is ready for the latest generation of SoC models. Mod Ready is now available for partners.

Vivo Xplay 5 to Launch March 1 With 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 820

Vivo, the Chinese tech company better known for its slimvsmartphone - the Vivo Max, has uvconfirmed it will include massive 6GB LPDDR4 RAM in its upcoming smartphone - the Xplay 5.
The confirmation comes from Vivo's Weibo account post made on Monday (via Phonearena). The post features a teaser image mentioning 6GB LPDDR4 RAM and Snapdragon 820 processor for the Vivo Xplay 5. The smartphone will be launched on March 1 this year. Some of the previous teasers have indicated the handset to sport a QHD (1440x2560 pixels) resolution display.
The inclusion of 6GB RAM should not come as a surprise to as Samsung in September last year already started producing 6GB LPDDR4 RAM for smartphones and tablets. Until now, the most we have seen in a smartphone or a phablet is 4GB RAM. Asus was the first in line to pack 4GB RAM in its Zenfone 2 handset, which was followed by Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Egde+.
We are yet to see how Vivo plans to make complete use of the 6GB RAM inside the Xplay 5. It is being assumed that the company might have found a way to dedicate some of the memory to its graphic unit.
Vivo at CES 2016 unveiled two Android smartphones, the Vivo 5 and Vivo XL. The Vivo XL sports a liquid metal finish while the Vivo 5 features a full metal design. Both the new Blu phones come with a lot of identical innards such as 5.5-inch Super Amoled HD display, octa-core MediaTek (MT6753) processor and more. One of the biggest differences between the two handsets is that the Vivo 5 features 3GB of RAM and comes with 32GB inbuilt storage, while the Vivo XL packs 2GB of RAM and includes 16GB of inbuilt storage.

Apple Resisting Magistrate Order to Share iPhone Information

Apple Resisting Magistrate Order to Share iPhone Information

Apple Resisting Magistrate Order to Share iPhone Information

Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook said Wednesday his company will resist a federal magistrate's order to hack its users in connection with the investigation of the San Bernardino, California shootings, asserting such a move would undermine encryption by creating a backdoor that could potentially be used on other future devices.

Cook's ferocious response, posted early Wednesday on the company's website, came after an order from US Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym that Apple Inc. help the Obama administration break into an encrypted iPhone belonging to one of the shooters in the December attack.

The first-of-its-kind ruling was a significant victory for the Justice Department in a technology policy debate that pits digital privacy against national security interests.

Noting the order Tuesday from federal Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym in California, Cook said "this moment calls for public discussion, and we want our customers and people around the country to understand what is at stake."

Cook argued that the order "has implications far beyond the legal case at hand."
Pym ordered Apple to help the FBI hack into an encrypted iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters.., and setting the stage for a legal fight between the federal government and Silicon Valley over a first-of-its-kind ruling.

The order directing Apple to help the FBI break into an encrypted iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardo shooters represents a significant victory for the Justice Department. The Obama administration has embraced stronger encryption as a way to keep consumers safe on the Internet, but struggled to find a compelling example to make its case.

Cook said in the website posting that the US government order would undermine encryption by using specialized software to create an essential back door that he compared to a "master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks."

"In the wrong hands, this software - which does not exist today - would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone's physical possession," Cook wrote. "The FBI may use different words to describe this tool, but make no mistake: Building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a back door. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control."

FBI Director James Comey told members of Congress last week that encryption is a major problem for law enforcement who "find a device that can't be opened even when a judge says there's probable cause to open it."

The ruling Tuesday tied the problem to the deadliest terrorist attack on US soil since the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Syed Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, killed 14 people in a Dec. 2 shooting at a holiday luncheon for Farook's co-workers. The couple later died in a gun battle with police.

Federal prosecutors told the judge in a court proceeding Tuesday - that was conducted without Apple being allowed to participate - that investigators can't access a work phone used by Farook because they don't know his passcode and Apple has not cooperated. Under US law, a work phone is generally the property of a person's employer. The judge told Apple to provide an estimate of its cost to comply with her order, suggesting that the government will be expected to pay for the work.

Apple has provided default encryption on its iPhones since 2014, allowing any device's contents to be accessed only by the user who knows the phone's passcode.

The ruling by Pym, a former federal prosecutor, requires Apple to supply highly specialized software the FBI can load onto the county-owned work iPhone to bypass a self-destruct feature, which erases the phone's data after too many unsuccessful attempts to unlock it. The FBI wants to be able to try different combinations in rapid sequence until it finds the right one.

It was not immediately clear what investigators believe they might find on Farook's work phone or why the information would not be available from third-party service providers, such as Google or Facebook, though investigators think the device may hold clues about whom the couple communicated with and where they may have traveled.

The couple took pains to physically destroy two personally owned cell phones, crushing them beyond the FBI's ability to recover information from them. They also removed a hard drive from their computer; it has not been found despite investigators diving for days for potential electronic evidence in a nearby lake.

Farook was not carrying his work iPhone during the attack. It was discovered after a subsequent search. It was not known whether Farook forgot about the iPhone or did not care whether investigators found it.

The phone was running the newest version of Apple's iPhone operating system, which requires a passcode and cannot be accessed by Apple, unlike earlier operating systems or older phone models. San Bernardino County provided Farook with an iPhone configured to erase data after 10 consecutive unsuccessful unlocking attempts. The FBI said that feature appeared to be active on Farook's iPhone as of the last time he performed a backup.

The judge didn't spell out her rationale in her three-page order, but the ruling comes amid a similar case in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Investigators are still working to piece together a missing 18 minutes in Farook and Malik's timeline from Dec. 2. Investigators have concluded they were at least partly inspired by the Islamic State group; Malik's Facebook page included a note pledging allegiance to the group's leader around the time of the attack.

In 2014, Apple updated its iPhone operating system to require that the phone be locked by a passcode that only the user knows. Previously, the company could use an extraction tool that would physically plug into the phone and allow it to respond to search warrant requests from the government.

FBI Director James Comey told members of Congress last week that encryption is a major problem for law enforcement who "find a device that can't be opened even when a judge says there's probable cause to open it."

HTC to Make Windows Mobile 10 Phone, First Smartwatch to Launch Soon: Reports

HTC, which launched the HTC One (M8) Windows Phone-powered flagship smartphone in 2014, may be prepping for another smartphone embracing Microsoft's mobile operating system. According to a job posting on Microsoft's website, HTC is working on a Windows 10 Mobile smartphone. Also, it appears the Taiwanese company is finally ready to launch its first smartwatch.
A job posting listed on the Redmond, Washington-based company's website hints at an HTC-made Windows 10 Mobile smartphone. The posting, in which Microsoft recognises HTC as one of its top third party phone manufacturers, says it is looking for personnel who can lead "all aspects of sales and business development interaction with HTC."
Windows 10 Mobile is Microsoft's newest mobile operating system. Currently, it is only available for select handsets such as the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 650, with many other Lumia smartphones including the Lumia 520 said to receive the software update in the coming weeks.
Separately, according to tipster Evan Blass (aka @evleaks), HTC plans to launch its first smartwatch soon. The long-rumoured smartwatch will go on sale before April, he said. A lot of ink has been spilled on the unannounced product. The wearable gadget was once spotted on a company's video. Last year, explaining why the company hasn't launched the smartwatch yet, HTC CEO Peter Chou said, "We try to be very careful instead of just putting out whatever, so we keep working on it."
A report from December 2015 claimed that the smartwatch will be called the HTC One Smartwatch and will be launched in February. The Taiwanese company is expected to launch the HTC One M10 at the Mobile World Congress next week. The company could utilise the same event to unveil its smartwatch as well. Only time will tell. To recall, HTC had also delayed the launch of its first wearable - the HTC Grip fitness tracker - to early 2016.
